Greening of the Planet

Global Initiative

Greening of the Planet is one of the largest international environmental movements, originally launched in Ukraine by Hanna Krysiuk and Sergey Gaydaychuk through the charitable foundation Greening of Ukraine.

The initiative quickly grew from a national campaign into a global movement that:

• 🌍 expanded to over 140 countries

• 👥 united millions of participants worldwide

• 🌳 resulted in millions of trees planted globally

In its early phase alone, more than 5.5 million trees were planted across 138 countries, with participation continuing throughout the year.

The project aims not only to restore ecosystems but also to build a global culture of environmental responsibility.

🇨🇦 Implementation in Canada

In Canada, the initiative was implemented
👉 with the support of VONA Foundation and Business Woman PRO Canada Corporation, led by Nadiya Yashan.

Tree planting activities took place across multiple cities and provinces, including:

• Mississauga (Erindale Park)

• Toronto (Centennial Park, Etobicoke)

• Oshawa (Mitchell Park)

• Quebec (Lake Kipawa area)

• Saskatchewan, Edmonton and other regions

On September 15, 2021, a large-scale planting took place in Mississauga, where 100 trees were planted in Erindale Park.

Another symbolic planting of 80 trees in Centennial Park (Toronto) was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence.

In Oshawa, the Ukrainian community planted 30 trees as part of the global record initiative.

Community Engagement

A defining feature of the project in Canada was strong community involvement.

Thanks to the outreach efforts of VONA Foundation, the Ukrainian community across different provinces and cities became actively engaged.

Participation included:

• organized public tree planting events

• individual contributions from families planting trees in their own yards

• schools, volunteers, and community organizations

Participants shared photos and geolocations, becoming part of a global collective impact.

The initiative was supported by partners such as:

• BCU Financial – Buduchnist Credit Union

• Ukrainian Canadian Medical Association of Ontario

• IOUC Fourth Wave

• Nova Shkola

The project also received support from public figures, including Yvan Baker, who encouraged participation on Earth Day.

Impact

The Greening of the Planet initiative in Canada became part of a larger global effort that:

• strengthened environmental awareness

• united communities

• contributed to ecosystem restoration

The project proved that both large-scale events and small individual actions can create meaningful global impact.

Continuing the Initiative – 2026

In 2026, VONA Foundation together with Business Woman PRO Canada Corporation continues to expand this environmental program in Canada.
